Frequently Asked Questions

What is melasma therapy?
Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by the development of dark, discolored patches on the skin, primarily on the face more prevalent in women than men. Melasma usually occurs on areas of the face that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin.

The exact cause of melasma is not fully established, but several factors contribute to its development, including hormonal changes, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition.

While melasma does not cause any physical discomfort or medical complications, it can have a significant impact on self-esteem and confidence due to its conspicuous appearance.

At BHC Aesthetics, our doctors have training and possess extensive expertise in the medical treatment of skin conditions including melasma. It is important to note that melasma can be a chronic condition that requires a combination of treatments and lifelong consistent sun protection. Prescription-only topical depigmenting agents remain the mainstay of melasma therapy.

At our clinic we have also access to the world’s 1st ever FDA-approved picosecond laser for the treatment of melasma - the PicoSure Pro™ .

The PicoSure Pro™ utilises a picosecond laser system, which emits ultra-short pulses of energy in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) for rapid delivery of energy and precise targeting.

The melanin-specific 755nm wavelength targets and eliminates undesired pigment, with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue and thus lower risk of PIH (post-inflammatory pigmentation) compared to all previous laser technologies.

What are the benefits?
  • Pigmentation reduction and correction
  • Brightening of the skin’s complexion
What is the discomfort level?
Mild, with use of handheld skin cooling device during the procedure. Topical anaesthetic can be provided but is not usually required.
Who can receive it?
Anyone, unless pregnant or breastfeeding. 2 week interval required after any prior injectables in the treated area
What is the expected downtime?
Zero, transient skin flushing lasting several hours only.
